Question: I have a mole on my arm that has changed a bit over the last year or so. It’s grown slightly larger and a bit darker. My doctor has recommended urgent surgery, to rule out melanoma, but it’s still quite small and doesn’t look too worrying to me. I am also a bit concerned about the cost of removal. So I’m wondering whether it’s really a matter of urgency or can I leave it for a while and see?

If your doctor is concerned that the mole could be melanoma, then, yes, the only way to rule out this most deadly form of skin cancer is to have it removed and sent to a lab for expert analysis. Early detection and treatment is your best defence against melanoma and the earlier the cancer is diagnosed, the better the outcome for the patient. Treatment is less expensive, surgery is less invasive and the survival rate is higher.
Unfortunately, studies have shown, the time between patients noticing a dodgy spot and having it checked and removed is often many months and this can mean the cancer has the opportunity to grow and become much more advanced.
