So good to be in 2021!

Welcome to our February 2021 issue of Channel Magazine. Isn’t it great to have 2020 behind us! The team at Channel Magazine is excited about 2021 and looking forward to producing 11 bumper monthly issues through the year. This is the first of them. We love highlighting all the positive stuff happening on the Shore.

For me personally the last few months of 2020 were very challenging, with a recurrent melanoma being found in my groin. In early November I had the melanoma removed, along with many related lymph nodes and have been recuperating ever since. My prognosis is good though I am now three doses into a year’s course of immunotherapy (Keytruda) and very positive about the future. Make sure you have your skin checked, cover up and sunblock. My latest problem came after having two melanoma removed previously. I want to give a big shout out to the Harbour Cancer Centre who are looking after me real well.
On a more positive note we have some great features in this issue. Heather (Barker Vermeer) has done a great interview with local Devonport athletics star Eliza McCartney. And Christine (Young) talks to Eileen Merriman, a Shore local who is a celebrated author as well as being a doctor who leads the haematology team at North Shore Hospital.
Our feature for this issue is Fitness and Wellbeing. We talk to some interesting Shore people with a passion in that space, and include an ‘inhouse’ piece for this on Christine Young from our team. Christine’s a machine who loves being fit, doing group fitness and lots of outdoors stuff, including tramping and cycling. Blake from Benefitz, local Takapuna jeweller Adrian, Les Mills trainer Olivia and former top sprinter Larissa all share their Fitness and Wellbeing journeys with us.
The Summernova Festival that’s aligned with the 36th America’s Cup action heats up in February and March and we have a full feature in this issue. We are looking forward to the Sunsetter Food, Wine and Music Festival at Smales Farm (Saturday February 13th) that’s part of the Summernova programme and also to the annual Milford Vive La France Day on Saturday February 27th. We love summer on the Shore!
Have a great February – may the sun keep shining!
