Robyn Cameron is a Milford dentist who is passionate about her job and the local community she works in. Dentistry is in her genes and, with over 30 years' experience in the industry, Robyn knows a fair bit about the profession! This month, Robyn tells Channel Magazine about her work and life on the North Shore, family and enjoying what this place has to offer...
Courtney Bennett: What is the best part about your job?
Robyn Cameron: I love helping people, meeting people and interacting with people of all ages and from different walks of life. Helping the community is very important to me. It is a challenging job and never the same from day to day. Creating happy and healthy smiles is what I love doing!
CB: Why did you decide to become a dentist?
RC: My father was a dentist and he encouraged me into the profession. He believed that dentistry is an ideal job for women as one can tailor working hours with family commitments.
CB: How did you get involved?
RC: I became involved in dentistry early on during my school years, working for my father as a dental assistant during the holidays to give my mother a break! He was such a hard worker and a real inspiration. I studied at Massey University for my first year and then moved to Dunedin to complete my degree in Dentistry at the University of Otago. Dunedin was a fun experience. I braved the Dunedin cold and made lifelong friends.
CB: Why are you passionate about your job?
RC: It is a very challenging, stimulating and rewarding occupation. The practice of dentistry is constantly changing and it is exciting to keep up with new trends and concepts. It also involves working as part of a team, which enables me to give the best care and treatment to all my patients.
CB: Who are the people you look up to and why?
RC: I look up to my children. They make me better. In this fast-paced world we live in they are smart, strong and determined. I am a very proud mother.
CB: What sorts of skills are needed to be a good dentist?
RC: A sense of humour, patience and experience.
CB: Summer or winter? Please explain why.
RC: I love summer, being at the beach swimming and reading a good book in the sun. However I also enjoy winter; going up the mountain for a ski, and there’s something about wrapping up warm - so cozy!
CB: Why do you enjoy working on the Shore?
RC: I love working on the Shore; there is such a great community and family feel about the area. The beaches are beautiful and the lake is great for windsurfing and rowing! The Shore has some of the best schools and, of course, great shopping spots!
CB: What do you do in your spare time?
RC: Play with my gorgeous granddaughter Zoe, she makes me laugh and she is growing up so fast. Spending time with my children - they are incredible and always challenging me keeping me on top of my game and, lastly, spending time with friends. I would like to start jogging and play tennis though in 2015.
