Eating out on the Shore

A Taste of Thailand in Milford

Thailand is one destination known for its amazing culture and cuisine. If you’re keen to replicate the sights and sounds of Thailand a little closer to home, then the Talay Thai Restaurant needs to be your next stop. Situated on Milford’s Kitchener Road, the restaurant first opened its doors in October 2011. Since then it has quickly gained a reputation for reasonable prices and exceptional service, all in an attractive and relaxed setting.
The Talay Thai Restaurant is owned and operated by Janya and Peter. Janya is from Bangkok and has been involved in the restaurant business for over seven years. With her siblings she also operates the two popular Thai Family restaurants in Pakuranga and Eastern Beach. The word ‘talay’ means ‘sea’ in Thai so it’s the perfect name for their new sister restaurant on the shore.
The Talay Thai Restaurant has seating for 40 people, and is fully licensed with BYOW.  It’s open for dinner 7 nights from 5.00pm until late and a takeaway menu is also available. If you’re fortunate enough to order the BBQ beef, then sit back and watch the show! Just as the hot plate of marinated sirloin steak, Thai homemade sauce and vegetables is about to be set in front of you, it’s engulfed in a sizzling brandy flame. The sight and aroma will set your tastebuds alight!
Another ‘must try’ dish is the Scallop Special, a dish of pan-fried scallops with a Thai homemade sauce and steamed vegetables. It’s a memorable dish – two friends of the Channel magazine were still talking about their scallops days after dining at Talay Thai.
A favourite with regular diners is the Lamb Rack Thai Special consisting of a pan-fried rack of lamb with Thai homemade sauce and steamed vegetables. The menu also caters for vegetarians, with an extensive choice of entrees, main courses and fried rice and noodles.
If you’re dining with a group of four or more and are having trouble deciding from the enticing menu, then you may like to choose one of the Banquet options. You will dine on a feast of mixed entrees, a selection of four main dishes accompanied by jasmine rice and finish with ice cream and a round of coffee or tea.
The Talay Thai Restaurant is not just for evening dining. Dine-in and takeaway lunch is available from Tuesday to Sunday 12.00pm to 2.30pm. Main course dishes start at just $10.50 and include favourites such as Pad Med Ma Muang, Pad Thai and Panang Curry. For your convenience there is also free delivery with lunch orders of $30.00 or more, a great option when time is tight.
Even though the Talay Thai Restaurant has only been on the shore for a short time it already has people talking. “We’ve got our regulars that keep coming back, and they’re telling their friends about us” says Peter. “They just absolutely love the food.”
