MILFORD - Everyone's place
Wilma Mactier – The ‘Creator’ of Carnival Costumes and Fancy Dress Hire
Wilma is an enterprising and warmhearted lady who created Carnival with the simple stitching of a clown costume for her daughter 20 years ago!
Wilma has sourced her amazing costume collection from auctions and op shops and utilised old favourites such as quilted bedspreads to make medieval cloaks and even contributed her own retro clothing.
One firm favourite with customers has been her baby blue crotchet flower dress from the 60’s. This is a classic and is indicative of the eclectic stock she has collected over many years.
It is interesting to note that Wilma’s grandfather was Archibald Grandison, builder of the Esplanade Hotel in Devonport.
Now aged 85, Wilma is still passionately involved in Carnival Costumes and is the leading seamstress for all major repairs and replacements.
Customers still remember her starting Carnival Costumes from her home in Forrest Hill before moving to the Milford premises 10 years ago.
The business has been owned for the last eight years by Jill and Wayne George.
Carnival Costumes has progressed to the modern boutique with a vast collection of high quality new costumes that it is also renowned for today. Jill and Wayne were former soloist dancers with the Royal New Zealand Ballet and danced in many classical productions at home as well as on television and opera in Sweden and France. They bring their own special creative interpretation to this enchanting, fun business.
As many customers have commented... Carnival is a veritable ‘treasure trove of costumes’.
