Channel Music Profile: AIMES Award recipients The Earlybirds
THE EARLYBIRDS are Flying Home
It was one year ago that Channel Magazine first introduced readers to Filip Kostovich, Sean Patterson, Mike Cannon and Jared Aisher, better known as North Shore bred rockers The Earlybirds. Back then the band was right on the cusp of breaking into the New Zealand psyche, they had a few hit singles playing on the radio and their first album was just about to be released. Channel caught up with lead singer Filip to find out what they boys are up to now and more importantly, when we can hear some new music!
The last time we spoke, Earlybirds fever was just getting started with three hit singles under your belt and the imminent release of your debut album, Favourite Fears, what’s been happening since?
Since then we have completed a couple of tours and we have relocated to Sydney to try and start to build a base here!
What is the day-to-day, week-to-week routine for a band living in Sydney?
We are playing two - five gigs every week and if we aren’t playing we are down stairs in the practice room writing and jamming new material. Oh and did I mention we are all living in one room probably much smaller than your average lounge on air beds and have been for the last four months.
What kind of reaction have people had to the band, are you getting much support and airplay over there?
The reaction at gigs is great; the people who are there really get into it. We want as many people as possible to hear our music hence why we are totally immersed in making this work, playing and practicing all the time.
The second album can be a big challenge, especially after a successful debut, are you busy writing and recording?
We are writing and doing home demos all the time. Any spare day we have we are down in the practice room trying new ideas out, trying things we haven’t done before and writing songs we would have never written two years ago. As writers we are very picky with what we like and what we want, sometimes this can be a weakness but usually it amounts to songs that we know in our own minds are great. If we are satisfied with what comes out then it’s great!
When can we expect to hear some new material from the band?
There is some new material up on our Triple J Unearthed page. Follow the link to listen to the tunes and rate and review them. www.triplejunearthed.com/theearlybirds - There will be more coming your way before the end of the year!
Are there any plans for a return to New Zealand – and the Shore! – to play some live shows?
Yes there is, we will be back in the motherland throughout October and will play Albany Fanzone on the 9th and Auckland Princess Wharf on the 21st.
Australia and New Zealand are obviously your real focus right now, are you looking to the UK or the States at all?
At the moment no, but if good opportunities arise we will be there in a heartbeat. Touring and playing in the UK and States would be something else!
What are The Earlybirds big plans for the future?
Plans for the future are to stick it out in Aus for a bit and really try to make a dent and impact on the scene over here. Also we will be recording and producing a 4 track E.P before the end of the year...so stay tuned
